A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A HABITAT VOLUNTEER WORKER

In Advance:
Know where the work site is, plan to arrive a little before 8 a.m.  (Saturdays)
Bring the following items if possible: hammer, pencil, tape measure, nail apron, gloves.
You should mark your tools with paint, tape or marker so you can positively identify them.
Dress appropriately.  Allow for the weather.  Bring Sun Block!  If you know what kind
of work is to be done, dress accordingly.

Arrival:
  Arrive before 8 a.m.  (Saturdays)
You will be asked to sign an injury release-waiver.  (only once)
You will be asked to sign-in so we know who is on site.
Please fill out and wear a nametag.

Your work will be determined by what is needed to be done that day, and what you feel comfortable doing.  In most cases you will be working in small groups on a particular assignment.  When that segment of work is completed, another task will be given to you.

You are encouraged to stop and rest, get a drink, use the facilities, put on Sun Block, etc.
at any time you feel it necessary.
    (Our restroom is a porta-john.)

Keep an eye on yourself.  No one needs to work beyond his or her physical capacity.
We have bandages, water and sun block on hand if you need them.
If you feel overwhelmed or frustrated by the task you are doing, ask for help, or ask to be assigned another task.

Lunch:  Lunch is (hopefully) brought in by one of the churches or volunteers by 12 noon.  We do
not dictate what should be offered for lunch.  Some are very elaborate and some are very plain.  If you have special diet considerations, it is wise to have your own "stash" in case the lunch offered isn't something your diet can handle.

Back To Work: After lunch, if you are staying the day, it is the same procedure as in the morning.
During the afternoon you are encouraged to monitor yourself by taking water and personal breaks as you feel the need.  Put on Sun Block!

Checking Out: We normally begin cleaning up the work site and trailer at 3:45 and work until 4, or to a
good stopping point.
However, you may leave at any time.

Please sign yourself out in the logbook.

THANK YOU and we hope you enjoyed your day.  We appreciate your spirit of giving.
