Catholic House Builds since 1997Just a short bit of past HISTORY...

Blitz Building on Faith Catholics from all over Washtenaw county gave of their time, talent and their treasures the last week of June to build a new home on the south side of Ypsilanti. The “Catholic House” was one of five homes constructed in an intensive week-long “Blitz Build” planned by Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley and was one of a hundred new homes built that week across the state of Michigan.
A new 1100 square foot house now stands at 968 Watling, and Jessie Rogers and her three children are finally living in a home of their own thanks to the efforts of some 300 dedicated Catholic men and women. Thousands of others, through their local parishes, contributed the $30,000 necessary to pay for and “sponsor” the house.
A steering committee headed by James Saunders has worked since January to assure that donations were collected, volunteers were signed-up, essential sub-contractors were scheduled, tools were on-site and food and drink was available.
“Actually the coordination effort was much more than Habitat had first led us to believe,” said Lynette LaPratt, one of the volunteer coordinators on the committee.
In its attempt to eliminate poverty housing, Habitat for Humanity now builds at the rate of one house every hour of every day and has built over 50,000 homes in its first 20 years. This makes it one of the top 10 largest home builders in the country.
Habitat founder and president, Millard Fuller, on tour through Michigan, visited the Ypsilanti sites during the week-end dedication of the new homes.
“We may disagree on all sorts of other things - baptism, communion, and what night to have prayer meetings,” said Fuller, ”But we can agree on the imperative of the gospel to serve others in the name of the Lord.”
“This has been one of the first significant events to bring the churches of the area together for a Catholic project in my 11 years here,” said Bill Flick, Social Ministry Director at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, and planner of the original effort to consolidate a Catholic team of sponsors. “Catholic participation in this ecumenical ministry is likely to continue for years to come,” he said.
