News June 17, 2001
The main I-beam over the basement was laid on Friday, June 8.
This is exciting news because, each step in this building process is dependant
upon a good completion of the previous steps. Before that I-beam
could be placed, preparatory steps were necessary, like: the foundation
was in by May 17; basement walls were delivered by May 25; the concrete
basement floor was poured by the end of May. Of course, the weather
did not always fit nicely into our construction schedule.
Some of our volunteers had a smashing start on Saturdays, June 2 &
9. The floor joists were placed and preparations were made for putting
down the main floor. We hope to have the house framed in by the end of
this month. One of our co-house-leaders, Doug Hock said, "We have
a good chemistry among our volunteers on this build." Our supervisors,
Gregory DeMaggio & Stephen Polgar promote a great work environment.
Some of the youthful vigor witnessed at the house may be attributed to
the lunches provided through the good graces of Marian McNally and others.
The majority of our volunteers get a chance to contribute their skills
once the big foundational steps are in place. Gradually, as the house
grows, we are able to employ more and more volunteers. If you
have not been called please be patient. Your turn will come in due
time & we will need your skills. Kudos to Mary Wakefield for all of
her work in contacting our volunteers. Mary said, "The list of volunteers
from all the Catholic groups is really huge. When volunteer's list
their available dates on the application it is very helpful." Barb Pott
at Catholic Social Services compiles the list of volunteers from all the
groups. And, then Mary has the task of calling.
Once you are called and scheduled to work on the
house you will need to plan for the day of work. Keep in mind that
there is drinking water available at the house, and, you may want to bring
some of your other favorite drinks. Remember to use sunscreen &
dress for sweat, you will get dirty.
The house on "Bens Street" in Ann Arbor (near
the intersection of Liberty & Maple) is sponsored by a coalition of
Catholic groups in Washtenaw County. These Catholic groups (9) have
contributed financially this year: St. Andrew; St. Francis; St. John the
Baptist; St. Joseph in Dexter; St. Joseph Mercy Hospital; St. Patrick;
St. Thomas the Apostle; Call to Action & The Knights of Columbus of
Washtenaw.
To benefit this Catholic Habitat House, The Knights
of Columbus also sponsor an "Annual Golf Outing" on Monday, July 9th
at Washtenaw Country Club. Sponsorships are welcome! Call Paul Ward
